New Year’s resolutions (and the post-holiday comedown) have a number of people see a lot of funky stuff happening with their skin that has them screaming WTF?! Typically, I take an inside-out approach - to heal the skin symptoms by addressing the often troubled gut and pissed-off liver. Let's also get the outside-in perspective of SkinCatering’s expert esthetician, Kim Brunton, who was willing to share one of her most common client exchanges.
Client: I’ve started a new wellness routine! Between the gym and my diet, my pickled liver & over-burdened intestines are purging all those holiday cookies & champagne bubbles – which are now bursting on my face! What do I do?!
Kim: “It’s not unusual to see purging of the skin after the holidays, after all, it is our largest organ and it has to detox like all of our other organs. First, I would start by cooling down the water temperature during your shower. This keeps your skin from being stripped of all the good oils you need to have for soft skin. Next, a gentle exfoliation is necessary to remove the dead cells and allow your natural oils to flow freely from the pores to eliminate clogging. Lastly, maintaining proper pH balance of the skin means keeping the correct amount of oil in your pore so you don’t become too dry or too oily. The proper amount of oil protects your pore from becoming raw and easily irritated. “
Client: How can I treat this at home?
Kim: “You can start a simple daily regimen to ease your holiday cookie-purged skin!”
Step One: Do a daily cleanse with a hydrating wash, preferably in the evening, though you can do this in the morning if you prefer. Make sure the water isn't too hot. That will strip the oils in your skin. (SkinCatering makes Lavender Lush.)
Step Two: Spray toner on your face upon waking, after showering, after cleansing. Pretty much any time throughout the day you want hydration for your skin. You can use our something like our Lemonade Spritzer. It’s great for work and home to keep your skin fresh.
Step Three: Exfoliate 1-2 times a week. We recommend, Ooh La La, our gentle sea clay & pumice based exfoliator before cleansing. The key is: Be gentle. Don't damage your skin.
Client: How often should I get a professional treatment?
Kim: When you’re detoxing and experiencing facial problems, a professional can properly treat your skin without causing damage or scarring. During your facial with me (recommended every 4-6 weeks) I do a magnified skin analysis, give you a deep cleansing and pain-free exfoliation, address individual irritations, prepare a specialized mask (to treat your binged skin) and end with a facial massage to stimulate circulation leaving you with a clear, beautiful face.
Many thanks to Kim for reminding us how to take care of our biggest organ of detoxification and giving me an opportunity to highlight the work of some Fabulous Femmes. SkinCatering scouts out safer ingredients and creates all of their own products in-house.
