Have you ever been frazzled, afraid, or felt like you were not enough? If that is the case, you are in the right place, my friend, to receive some inspired and totally doable action steps.
Joining me this week is one of my mentors, Chelsea Collier. Chelsea is wicked smart. Her mission is to unite the public and private sectors to create smarter cities and more connected communities. Here is more professional cred: She’s the Founder of Digi.City, Editor-At-Large for Smart Cities Connect, and Co-Founder of Impact Hub Austin. She’s a 2018 Marshall Memorial Fellow and a 2016 Eisenhower Fellow. Her work has been published through Inc.com, Venture Beat, the Chicago Tribune and more. She is also an Advisor to the St. Edwards’ University Business School, the Austin Technology Alliance, and the Austin Forum. Chelsea has won an Austin Under 40 Award and has a masters and a bachelor degree in Communications from the University of Texas at Austin. Whew! All of that - well, it just scratches the surface of what Chelsea is all about.
I connected with Chelsea at SXSW in Austin. If you’ve never been to SXSW, put it on your bucket list and go. I’ve made so many amazing connections at this conference. The advice I received there - from folks like Chelsea - have led to some major professional breakthroughs and unexpected support. Plus, it’s helped me introduce you to amazing women doing some impactful work, so we can learn from them.
In today’s episode, we touch on some big concepts in the world of technology. Have no fear! Chelsea breaks things down in a way that is super easy to follow, so stick with us. We talk about figuring out what you want to do when you grow up and making it happen. No job description for your dream job? No problem. We talk about what to do if you don’t fit into a nice, neat box. Plus, we geek out a little on sustainable fashion.
Join Chelsea and me. Tune in from your laptop or favorite device. You’ve got options.

All of this wisdom is from Chelsea herself (with some minor edits for readability).
[00:07:21] A smart city and, truly it's about a smart community, could be a metropolitan area like a city, a county, a region, a state, or even a nation. It's about how technology integrates into that smart community to make it run more efficiently, to increase the quality of life for all people and to increase the economic prosperity of that community.
[00:15:13] There are just so many huge changes coming up. I'm a bit of a change-aholic. I get really excited and energized by change.
[00:15:33] A lot of the work that I do is to forecast what's happening and then create a model and a body of work where people can refer to it and say, “Okay, I can see where the sphere is coming from, and here's a way to navigate it.”
[00:21:53 It’s about really claiming what you want. That may feel bold, but to me, I think it's our responsibility. We've been given this life; why not optimize it to the best of our ability?
[00:22:09] The tricky part is once you really claim what it is in your heart that you want to do - what you want to give to the world - believe that it's possible. It's the belief part that a lot of people get hung up on.
[00:22:45] Anyone can do it. There's no magic resource. There's not some catalytic event that happened in my life. It's just one little thing in front of the other.
[00:23:01] I think we have a tendency to look at our lives and think, “Well, I don't have enough [fill in the blank].” All of that is just fiction. It's just made up stuff that somehow entered our heads at some time in our life. We obey those rules for some strange reason. I just decided I'm not going to listen to that anymore, and I'm just going to do it.
[01:02:07] I was pretending that I had to be somebody I wasn't. That was just the ultimate insult to myself.
[01:03:07] There's a saying I go back to, I can't remember who said it. It’s “Do what you do best and link to the rest.”
[01:36:15] There are so many things that I have not done. All of those metrics of the things you're supposed to check the boxes [off on], it's irrelevant. It is totally irrelevant. You’ve just got to get started doing your dream. It’s possible.

The comment section is there for you, IF you can (1) be excellent to others, (2) ask or say things like you're talking to a real human, and (3) be critical without being nasty. If you can't do that, prepare to be deleted. Otherwise, have fun and merci beaucoup for adding to the convo.
